Introduction

DUHIG, (O)DUFFY, DOWEY: The name Duffy or O'Duffy is widespread in Ireland: it is among the fifty most common surnames; standing first in the list for County Monaghan, it is also very numerous in north Connacht. It is also found in Munster to some extent, but there it often takes the form Duhig, while in parts of Donegal it has become Doohey and Dowey. These variants arose from local pronunciations of the Irish O Dubhthaigh, a surname in which the root word is dubh (black).

James and Catherine Duhig emigrated from Ireland to Lowell Massachusetts sometime in the early 1820s. James Duhig was born in Cork County, Ireland, about 1787 and died September 5, 1859 at the State Alms House, Tewksbury MA. His wife Catherine Duhig was also born in Cork County, Ireland, in 1800. She died in 1845 at 45 years of age of cholera. She is buried at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Lowell Massachusetts. James and Catherine had five children, all sons.

The Lure of Gold - Onward to the Cariboo!

John Duhig was listed in the census as a laborer in Lowell, Massachusetts, but migrated to Barkerville/Quesnel area of British Columbia, Canada (also called "The Cariboo") sometime around 1860. Gold had been discovered in 1858 in the Cariboo sparking what has been called "The Cariboo Gold Rush." John had a saloon in Quesnel until his death in 1871. The local newspaper reported John was found dead in the water closet. As reported in a letter from a local doctor a year earlier, John had recently lost control of himself due to a bout of heavy drinking, which may have been the cause of his death. He was only 45 years old when he died.

Dennis Dexter Duhig had a wayward youth after his mother died in 1845, when he was only 9. He was located in the 1850 census (p. 400), which would seem to mistakenly identify him as age 17 (he was 14), living in the State Reform School for Boys in Westbrough, Worchester County, Massachusetts. The reason listed for his incarceration: "idle and dissolute." By the early 1860s Dennis had joined his older brother, John, in the Barkerville/Quesnel area of British Columbia.

In 1864 in Victoria, Dennis Dexter Duhig married Marietta Josephine Spear, still shy of her 18th birthday, after which they settled in Quesnel, British Columbia (also known as Quesnelmouth). After the birth of one daughter, Katie Marie Duhig, in 1867, and the loss of two other children, one in infancy and the other at birth, Dennis and Marietta relocated to California, where their second daughter, Ida Helena (Lena), was born in San Francisco in 1869, and a son, Frederick Dexter, was born to them in California in 1871. They ultimately settled in the Ventura area of California where Marietta had family, until the untimely death of Dennis' brother prompted the family's return to Quesnel. Katie Marie Duhig was my great grandmother.
