CALLIHAN, CALLAHAN, (O)CALLAGHAN: Members of the Callihan family migrated from Ulster before the Revolutionary War in the late 18th century and likely had earlier origins in Northern Cork, the traditional location of the O'Callaghan sept, of which the name Callihan is likely a variant spelling.
|
CALLIHAN: Irish: Variant of Callahan. Reduced Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Ceallacháin 'descendant of Ceallachán', a diminutive of the personal name Ceallach, possibly meaning 'lover of churches', from ceall 'church', or (more likely) 'bright-headed', from cen 'head' + lach 'light'. This name was borne by a 10th-century king of Munster, from whom many present-day bearers of the surname claim descent. -- Dictionary of American Family Names, Oxford University Press |
Other spelling variations include: O'Callahan, Calahan, Cellaghan, Kalahan, Kallaghan, Kallahan, O'Kallaghan, Kellaghan, Kelleghan, Kellahan, Kelahan, Ceilahan, Ceilaghan, Callachan, Calachan, Callagan, Calagan, Kelagan, Callighan and many more.

THOMAS CALLIHAN was born March 31, 1757, possibly in Northern Ireland. He died April 4, 1841, near Pleasantville in Bedford County, PA. He married MARY PROCTOR before 1783. Mary was born about 1754, possibly in Ireland, and died January 30, 1839 in Bedford County, PA, near Pleasantville. Both are buried in a private cemetery on the Callihan farm.
Thomas and Mary lived and died on the Callihan farm above Pleasantville at (PO) Alum Bank, PA. Their graves are plainly marked on the hill above their plantation, a strong iron fence recently erected helps to mark the two lovely graves. Mary is buried with her husband Thomas on the highest point of their large 160 acre plantation.
Family tradition states that, after Mary's death on October 26,1839, Thomas took her body up the hill and placed it in a tree, where it remained until the spring thaw. (Hoffman, Anna Callihan. Undated 94 page booklet, titled, Out of the Knotholes.) Hand carved headstones mark their graves. Thomas' gravestone is inscribed simply "AP-3 1841 T.C. A-84Y-3D". Mary's is inscribed simply "Jan 30 1839 M K"). The initial "K" may represent a variant spelling of the name Callihan.
Thomas Callihan is recorded as having paid taxes as single person in 1778 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The first record of Thomas Callihan in Bedford Co was in 1785 (RLC). Thomas and Mary lived in Oldham Hollow; where he was a farmer and school director.
Bedford County Tax rolls show that Thomas Callihan owned taxable property in Bedford Township from 1785-1792, and in St. Clair Township in 1795 and 1804. This may reflect changed township boundaries rather than a move on Thomas' part.
Thomas "Callahan" is shown on the 1800 Census for Bedford and St Clair Townships, as are individuals of the Blackburn, Bowen, and Crissman families, surnames that subsequently became part of the Callihan ancestry and descendency.
On January 20, 1805, Thomas Callihan put the following advertisement in the Bedford, PA Gazette:
"INFORMATION WANTED. If Jacob or Nancy Callihan be alive they will gratify a brother by writing to the Subscriber and letting him know. In the year 1778 at which time the Subscriber separated from them, they both lived in the State of New Jersey; Jacob in Sculey's Mountain, Morris County; and Nancy in Woodbridge Township, Morris County. Subscriber living in Bedford County, Thomas Callihan".
