Introduction

The Armour family name occurred first around Berwickshire, on the border between England and Scotland (also called the Borders or Borderland), where the Armours held a family seat for many centuries.

ARMOUR, ARMOR: Scottish and northern Irish: from Middle English, Old French armure, blended with the agent noun armer (see Armer), hence an occupational name for a maker of arms and armor. The collective noun armure denoted offensive weapons as well as the more recently specialized sense of protective gear.

-- Dictionary of American Family Names, Oxford University Press,

Robin Armour was born in Scotland some time at the end of the 18th century. He married Sarah White. He moved to County Antrim, Ireland, we are not sure when, as part of the migration of Scotch Irish Presbyterians from Scotland to Ulster (beginning around 1630). Robert and Sarah’s first son, William, was born five miles from town of Bellomene, now called Ballymena, County Antrim, in 1814.

Later the family lived in a small house next to the Randlestown Handkerchief Company, Kilnock, Randalstown, County Antrim, Ireland. From family reports Robin and Sarah Armour had at least six children, including three sons and three daughters.

Migration: Ulster to Ontario to Waterville

Robert Armour, born 1827, second son of Robin and Sarah Armour , came with a sister to Ontario, Canada in 1847 at the age of 19. Robert’s wife, Phoebe Stinson came with her family from Ireland, arriving in 1843 at the age of 10. They both came in sailing vessels -- Phoebe's trip was 6 weeks and Robert's 3 weeks.

Robert Armour was of a ruddy complexion, with clear blur eyes and sandy hair. When young he was about 5'/10-11". He weighed about 180 lbs. His hair was silvery white for years before he died.

Phoebe Stinson had dark blue eyes, straight eyebrows, and dark brown curly hair that held its color and its curl as long as she lived.

Both sides of the family's ancestors were Scotch. No Irish. Robert's people were Presbyterians and Phoebe's were Church of England.

Robert and Phoebe had 10 children, all born in the same house in Maple Valley, Township of Osprey, County of Grey, Dominion of Canada, Province of Ontario.

Westward to Oregon Territory

Robert and Phoebe Stinson Armour wheat ranched in Ontario until Robert decided the winters were too hard. He took their family by wagon and horseback to Oregon Territory, to Douglas County in the eastern half of what was to become Washington state, where they took up a homestead northeast of Farmer, where Robert and his family lived for 15 years before moving into Waterville. Robert and Phoebe celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in Waterville April 26, 1903 just two months before Phoebe's death.
